July is the month where South Africa and everyone around the world celebrates and honors the legacy of former President Nelson Mandela’s birthday. The 18th of July has been declared Nelson Mandela International Day, but as South Africans, we embrace the chance to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s life for the whole month of July. This allows everyone the opportunity to note the call to action for people to recognize their individual power to make an imprint and change the world around them.
Former President Nelson Mandela has been committed to the betterment of the lives of others and it is said that the idea of Mandela Day was inspired by Nelson Mandela at his 90th birthday celebrations in London’s Hyde Park in 2008 when he said: “it is time for new hands to lift the burdens. It is in your hands now.”
The aim of Mandela Day is a call to action that celebrates the idea that each individual has the power to transform the world, the ability to make an impact. Nelson Mandela fought for social justice for 67 years so to celebrate the day, we have to do our 67 minutes and give back to the communities and help those in need – in the true spirit of Mandela Day.
This Mandela month, why don’t you gather some friends, colleagues or loved ones and choose one day this month to experience the Cradle of Humankind, which is one of only 8 must-see world heritage sites in the country? This will afford you the opportunity to see for kilometers where some of our earliest ancestors used to walk. You could turn this visit into a hot air balloon party for you and your friends, colleagues or loved ones.
For approximately one hour, you get to be in the sky, above clouds, in silence enjoying the landscape and spectacular views – this is something that cannot be explained by words. It must be experienced in person. Even if you are afraid of heights, this would be an ideal way to overcome your fears. The hot air balloon trip will allow you to get used to your surroundings calmly with a slow ascent that will provide you with serenity throughout the journey. The beautiful views will make you forget about everything else.
The hot air balloon trip takes place at sunrise, as winds are at their calmest during the first hour of the day and therefore this is the best time to fly. It is an early start to the day but it is definitely worth getting up for. Unfortunately, we do not fly in the afternoon as the winds are just too unpredictable.
You should wear whatever you feel most comfortable in. It is advisable to dress in layers as it can get quite chilly on the launch site but once you’re up in the air, you will be surprised at how warm it is, especially under the burners. You may also want to wear a hat to shield your head from the heat of the burners. And since it is winter, gloves, scarves, and beanies are recommended.
