The best time of the day for a hot air balloon safari is in the early morning, just after dawn. This is because the hot air balloon is controlled by air currents and is seriously affected by cross winds.
In the early dawn, the convection winds and cross winds are a lot less strong and easier to manage for the balloon pilot.
This also coincides with the movements of the animals as they are waking up at dawn and making their way down to the watering holes before the heat of the day. Watching the wild animals in the early morning from the safety of the hot air balloon is simply breath taking. They are not phased by the presence of the balloon and go about their business as they are not threatened (and may show a mild interest) by your presence.
Equally beautiful is watching the sun cast its rays down on to the earth and breathe new life into another day. Nothing else is quite as moving or as beautiful to see from a hot air balloon.

We will be celebrating our wedding anniversary this month and I know my husband had been talking about going on a hot air balloon for quite some time, so I thought I’d surprise him. Could you please let me know what the full price will be for two people on either the 12th or 26th September? How long does the trip take? Does the flight end where it started? Would you suggest accommodation nearby due to the early start? (We live in JHB). Is it cold up there, what clothing must be worn or what is suggested? I am petrified, but hubby loves the thrills, he will be 67 on the 13th September, our anniversary is 26th. Last year we flew side by side in tiger moths, it was a bity windy on the day and I prayed all the way, his pilot did a few stunts, I think my pilot knew he’d get a smack against the head if he tried anything funny.
